Bulgarie Climate Overview

Bulgaria has a transitional climate between continental and Mediterranean influences. Northern regions experience cold winters and warm summers, while the south enjoys milder temperatures year-round. The Black Sea coast has a maritime climate with moderate seasonal variation. Mountain areas, including the Rila and Pirin ranges, receive heavy snowfall from November through April.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring arrives gradually from March with temperatures between 10°C and 20°C. Summer (June–August) sees averages of 25°C to 32°C, with heat waves pushing above 38°C. Autumn is mild and colorful. Winter brings regular snow to most of the country, with January averages around -2°C in Sofia.

Weather Considerations

Bulgaria experiences occasional severe cold waves from Siberian air masses, bringing extreme frost. Summer thunderstorms can be intense with hail. Ski season runs from December through March in resorts like Bansko and Borovets, where snow depth can exceed 2 meters.
