Italy stretches across several climate zones, from Alpine conditions in the north to subtropical warmth in Sicily and Sardinia. The Po Valley has foggy winters and humid summers. Central Italy enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate, while southern regions experience long, hot summers with minimal rainfall from June through September.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring (March–May) offers pleasant weather across the peninsula with temperatures from 15°C to 25°C. Summer heat intensifies southward, with Sicily regularly exceeding 40°C. Autumn brings the grape harvest season with occasional heavy Mediterranean storms. Winter is mild along the coasts but cold in the Alps and Apennines.
Weather Considerations
The Sirocco, a hot wind from the Sahara, can push temperatures above 40°C in southern Italy during summer. Northern Italy faces fog and freezing temperatures in winter. Venice experiences acqua alta (high water) flooding from October through March. Alpine regions see avalanche risk during heavy snowfall.
